The 22-year-old gymnastics superstar who took the world by storm at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite all of her success, which includes four Olympic golds and one bronze medal, Simone had her fair share of struggles because of her expertise in gymnastics. Namely, even though she has become the most decorated gymnast in history, finally surpassing Shannon Miller, Simone spent many years being self-conscious about her muscular body. She spoke to Today Style about how she overcame that lack of confidence and learned to love her strength.

Simone shared that she was often teased for being so muscular when she was younger. “People would say mean things at the time. They used to call me a ‘swoldier,’ which didn’t make me feel the best,” Simone revealed on Today. “I wore sweaters or jackets all year long to cover my arms.” She continued that it was meeting other competitive gymnasts like her who helped her finally become confident in her looks.

“As gymnasts, we look similar to each other, so we’ve helped each love our bodies because it helps us with what we do. Everybody looked the same, had the same muscular build and we could all do things that other athletes couldn’t do.” Simone went on to describe how fellow Final Five teammate, Aly Raisman served as an incredible role model for someone who didn’t shirk away from her physical gifts.“Aly Raisman helped me a lot with my body-confidence issues and helped me learn to love how I look. She’s taught me a lot along the way, but most of the time, it’s just the same message: love yourself,” Biles concluded. These days, she’s more than happy to flaunt her strong physique, and hopes that other girls will be able to follow in her footsteps.

Ariya Jutanugarn – $12 Million
Golf might not be as lucrative a sport for women as tennis, but that doesn’t mean that female golfers aren’t raking in the big bucks. Muguruza herself was ranked number one shortly after her second major tournament win, 2017’s Wimbledon. She won the French Open the year prior.

Flavia Pennetta – $7 Million

Horrifically, it was done by a deranged fan of Steffi Graf courtside during a match. Although her success on the court waned, a book deal brought her money in addition to earlier prize money. Seles’s net worth is estimated to be $20 million.

Yani Tseng – $8 Million
Yani Tseng, from Taiwan, is the youngest woman to have won five major golfing championships at the age of 22. Billie Jean King is one of the most important female athletes of the previous century. Agnieszka Radwánska – $25 Million
Agnieszka Radwánska didn’t win any of the major championships before she retired in 2018. Since going pro in 2005, though, she has become one of the most popular players and won the WTA Fan Favorite Singles Player six times. She’s made over $27 million in prize money alone!

Lorena Ochoa – $15 Million
The best and most notable Latin American golfer, whether man or woman, is doubtlessly Lorena Ochoa. She’s been number one for most consecutive weeks than anybody else, and only relinquished her place in the rankings when she retired in 2010. Martina Hingis won over $24 million in her 23 years playing tennis, breaking records since starting at the age of 14 in 1994. She is the youngest player to have won a major tournament and be ranked number one. Jelena Jankovic – $15 Million
Jelena Janković is the first player to get to number one without winning a major singles tournament, which she held for just a week. Victoria Azarenka – $15 Million
The premier player from Belarus, male or female, is doubtlessly Victoria Azarenka. She’s the only Belarussian to have won one of the major tournaments, having won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013. Since then, Azarenka has continued to be a serious competitor and has earned over $30 million in prize money. She’s still a force to be reckoned with, even though her current rank isn’t that high. The first tennis player endorsed by Red Bull, notably, her $15 million net worth is due to prior winnings and endorsements combined.

Alexis DeJoria – $100 Million
Alexis DeJoria is a drag racer in the National Hot Rod Association, but she hasn’t yet realized her dream of being the first woman to win a championship in the NHRA. Racing isn’t the source of her immense wealth, though, as her father happens to be billionaire John Paul DeJoria, who co-founded Paul Mitchell. DeJoria took the company from door-to-door sales, turned it into a multi-billion-dollar company, and also founded Patrón tequila. Patrón also happened to sponsor his daughter.

Venus Williams – $95 Million
Venus Williams is the first African-American woman to be ranked number one since Althea Gibson back in the ’50s. Furthermore, it was her successful campaign that finally brought women equal pay in tennis. Out of the current batch of active players, only Serena has won more than her. Her almost $42 million in prize money is also the second-highest, after her sister. With endorsements, her net worth comes out to $95 million.

Yuna Kim – $21 Million
Yuna Kim, one of the most accomplished figure skaters in the world, did so much to put South Korea on the map for skating. Namely, these include the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the Four Continents Championships, and the Grand Prix Final. Her net worth is currently $21 million, which is after she reportedly donated $2.7 million to charity.

Anna Kournikova – $50 Million
Anna Kournikova was never the greatest singles player, having only achieved a record world ranking of eight. She was number one in doubles, along with Martina Hingis as her partner, and won the Australian Open twice. Despite her limited successes on the court, she became something of a cultural phenomenon and retired from competition aged just 21. She has a net worth of $50 million, despite career winnings of just over $3.5 million. Comăneci happens to own one of the best gymnastics schools in the U.S. and a production company that broadcasts gymnastics events.

Li Na – $50 Million
Li Na, who won the 2011 French Open and 2014 Australian Open, peaked at number two in the world rankings. To understand her net worth, which stands at some $50 million, alongside a comparatively meager $16 million in winnings, you have to understand that she’s the first Chinese player to ever go so far. Most of the money’s been from endorsements, as she’s a role model to many fellow Chinese tennis players. She is the first Asian-born tennis player to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

P.V. Sindhu – $10 Million

Caroline Wozniacki – $30 Million
Caroline Wozniacki recently retired, but she brought in a whopping $34 million in prize money before she did. Tennis experts credit her success on the court to her defensive playing, which brought her to the finals in the US Open in 2009 when she was just 19 years old. She continued to be a seasonal contender, despite dropping in the rankings in subsequent years. Wozniacki managed to turn around and win the Australian Open in 2018.

Madison Keys – $8 Million
Madison Keys has been making a name for herself as a serious competitor after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2015. With her endorsements and spendings over the years, she now has a net worth of $30 million.

Steffi Graf – $30 Million
Steffi Graf is definitely in the running for the greatest female tennis player of all time, dominating from the end of the ’80s to the mid-’90s. Although she’s got 22 major singles tournament wins under her belt, only one fewer than Williams, Graf’s career lasted for just under 17 years, while this will be Williams’ 25th year. Her winnings are just under $22 million, but she’s got a long history of lucrative endorsements that date back to her breakout success in the ’80s. She’s still a heavyweight name in the tennis world with a net worth of $30 million.

Karolína Plíšková – $15 Million

She’s made over $29 million in prize money since becoming a professional player in 2003, not to mention millions in endorsements. Forbes had her at number two in top-earning female athletes for 2017. Kerber’s net worth is estimated to be around $30 million today, and that will likely only go up.

Elina Svitolina – $12 Million
Elina Svitolina has never been ranked higher than number three, but she is the only Ukrainian woman to make it that high on the list. Currently number seven, she’s remained a consistent contender over the years, despite never winning any of the major tournaments. She’s beaten the Williams sisters, as well as Halep, Kerber, and Osaka, and the 25-year-old has made over $19 million in winnings over the decade. She got to the semifinals of the French and US Opens in 2019 and her net worth is currently valued at $12 million.

Marta Vieira da Silva – $13 Million
Pelé himself dubbed Marta Vieira “Pelé in skirts,” which serves to tell you just how good she is. She’s actually broken records for both men and women, with the distinction of scoring 17 goals in World Cup matches. Marta has also won FIFA World Player of the Year five times, more than anyone else. Female soccer players don’t make as much as tennis players, who make as much as their male counterparts, so Marta made money elsewhere. Much of her $13 million is because of endorsements.

Gina Carano – $8 Million
Gina “Conviction” Carano made waves with her successful MMA career. It only lasted three years, yet Carano was the so-called “face of women’s MMA” for a time. By the time Cyborg beat her in 2009, she was so popular she seamlessly retired from fighting to concentrate on acting. She’s starred in Haywire, Deadpool, and The Mandalorian, so you might have recognized her as Cara Dune. Not surprisingly, most of her net worth didn’t come from prize money, but from her acting over the years.

Abby Wambach – $4 Million
Abby Wambach is one of the world’s most famous female soccer players. Unable to boast the same net worth as some of her male counterparts, she’s still managed to accrue some $4 million, which is mostly in endorsements. She was the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year, which was the first time in a decade an American won.

Miesha Tate – $6 Million
Miesha Tate is among the UFC’s original women stars, with her 2012 bout with Ronda Rousey getting credited for changing the name of the game in women’s UFC by Dana White. Worth $6 million today, Tate’s successfully beat Holly Holm to become the bantamweight champion, but she only made $92,000 on that fight. Most of her money comes from endorsements and the career she’s built surrounding MMA. She retired in 2016 and has made money since as a sports pundit. Tate has also modeled for several magazines.

Heather Mitts – $9 Million
Heather Mitts is married to A.J. Fealey, a former quarterback in the NFL, and together they’re worth $12 million. It’s estimated he’s brought $3 million to the table, while she’s brought the rest. She still runs a soccer camp for kids when she’s not taking part in various international soccer competitions worldwide.

Joanna Jędrzejczyk – $5 Million
Joanna Jędrzejczyk is a force to be reckoned with in the UFC. Fighting there since 2012, she won the UFC Strawweight belt in 2015 after defeating Carla Esparza. Jędrzejczyk is the first Polish titleholder in the UFC. Although she’s since lost the belt, she’s stood out as a perennial contender. She’s one of the foremost strikers in the competition who is ranked fifth in the pound-for-pound rankings. It makes sense because, before the UFC, she was a champion Muay Thai and kickboxing fighter. All in all, her net worth is estimated to be $5 million.

Samantha Stosur – $18 Million
Samantha Stosur shines in the doubles categories, with six different major tournament wins. Despite this, she has never been ranked number one for singles, yet she still managed to win the singles US Open competition in 2011. The elusive number one ranking is misleading, as she’s a formidable player who has defeated some of the world’s best one-on-one, including Serena Williams and Justine Henin. She’s made over $18 million in prize money that she’s certainly spent, in some part. Since turning pro in 1999 she’s been smart with her endorsements, which bring her net worth up to $18 million today.

Gabby Douglas – $4 Million
One of the “Fierce Five” who rocked the international gymnastics world in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, Gabby Douglas has made $4 million from endorsements and book sales following her famous displays of athleticism during these games. Vera Zvonareva never got to the number one spot in the singles rankings, yet the Russian tennis player has won four major tournaments in doubles. Despite these successes, she has had a hard time recreating these performances in recent years and is currently ranked 424th in singles and 101st in doubles. Her career prize earnings are just under $14 million, and with endorsements over the years she’s been able to keep her net worth at around that amount.

Brittney Griner – $4 Million
Brittney Griner is one of the best women playing basketball today, but once again her net worth reflects the massive pay gap in team sports between men and women. While she makes over $100,000 a year playing in the WNBA, she’s taken up short contracts playing in China, whose league doesn’t have the same price caps. She made $600,000 in three months in 2014, reportedly. Her net worth is currently estimated to be $4 million, which is partly from endorsements as well.

Cris “Cyborg” Justino – $5 Million
Cris “Cyborg” Justino may be the greatest female MMA fighter in recent memory. While Ronda Rousey became probably the most popular female fighter in MMA, Justino has been around for much longer and held on to her belts for much longer. Indeed, she’s the only fighter to ever be the champion of the UFC, Strikeforce, Bellator, and Invicta in various stages of her career. Cyborg was undefeated from November 2005 to December 2018, when Amanda Nunes finally took her belt.

Allyson Felix – $8 Million
Allyson Felix is one of the best runners around, and the only female track and field athlete to have six gold medals to her name. Furthermore, she’s tied with Merlene Ottey for most Olympic medals in general with nine. Currently, it’s estimated that Felix has $8 million.

Petra Kvitová — $30 Million
Petra Kvitová is notably the first person born after 1990, either male or female, to have won one of the major tennis tourneys. This, combined with the fact that a woman being a top-tier car racer is an anomaly, has brought her a lot of endorsements and popularity. ro

Indian athletes and teams have been making a splash in international competitions over the past decade, and Nehwal is part of that. She’s a cultural icon that has appeared on TV in India and even released an autobiography, which was later adapted into a 2018 biopic. Her net worth is estimated at $24 million.

Lindsey Vonn – $8 Million
While skiers really don’t make much money, skiing is one of the few sports in the world with equal pay between men and women. That being said, you still have to be in the top 10 or so to not have to work a second job. Lindsey Vonn isn’t just one of the top 10 female skiers competing today, but probably one of the top one or two who competed in the past 30 or 40 years. Because of that, she’s one of the rare skiers with $8 million in net worth.

Nilla Fischer – $5 Million
Nilla Fischer has made a lot of money from her endorsements, reaching a net worth of $5 million despite barely making a six-figure paycheck, in all likelihood. Her sponsorships with companies such as Puma have contributed. Sadly, only the highest-paid women players get past $100,000 in yearly paychecks. Fischer stands out, though, as one of the leading players on the Swedish national team, but also for her distinctive hairstyle. Furthermore, she’s been one of the most outspoken advocates for better conditions and equal pay for female soccer players around the world.

Martina Navratilova – $15 Million
Martina Navratilova might be the best tennis player on this list, although Serena Williams and Steffi Graf give her a run for her money. She has made over $21 million in winnings, retiring right after winning her last US Open in mixed doubles. She was 49 at the time! While there’s definitely some argument over who’s the best female tennis player, Billie Jean King herself said Navratilova was “the greatest singles, doubles, and mixed doubles player who’s ever lived.”

Justine Henin – $14 Million
Regarding Belgian tennis, the two names that should invariably come to mind are Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin. Wimbledon is the only major tournament Henin hasn’t won before she retired for the second time in 2011. We trust the legacy she has built and $14 million net worth will be enough to hold her off from making another return, but who knows? With seven major tournament wins in singles, chances are the 37-year-old will be able to rest easy knowing she’s one of the best women to have played the game.

Alex Morgan – $3 Million
Alex Morgan is one of the best of the generation of female soccer players that came of age in the last decade. She’s a member of the U.S. national team, but Morgan hasn’t relied on soccer paychecks to make so much money. Her endorsements include appearing alongside Lionel Messi on FIFA 16 covers sold in the U.S., although she’s also written books for kids. Morgan is the author of The Kicks, a series of books for middle schoolers that was on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Surya Bonaly – $3 Million
Surya Bonaly made waves in the skating world with her absolutely phenomenal displays of athleticism, which aren’t close to being matched by those winning gold medals at the Olympics. Critics blast the games for seemingly penalizing her for her unorthodox style. Bonaly landed a backflip on one blade! No woman has done that, and it earned her a place on Champions on Ice, a skating show where she’s made a lot of money. At the moment, her net worth is valued at $3 million.

Bianca Andreescu – $4 Million
Bianca Andreescu has only been a professional since 2017, yet she’s already made almost $7 million in prize money. That’s impressive, considering she turns 20 in 2020. Most recently, she won the US Open singles tournament in 2019 against the great Serena Williams. With all of this success, she’s gotten a lot of supporters, both in Canada and Romania, where her parents are from. She has several sponsorships and endorsements, so her net worth is only expected to go up from here.

Ashleigh Barty – $10 Million
Ashleigh Barty had a heck of a year in 2019. Currently, she’s ranked first in the world after spectacularly winning the 2019 French Open. Her career prize winnings amount to just under $17 million, which is ridiculous considering she’s just 23 years old. She also took a two-year hiatus when she was 18 years old, so that’s a couple of years less she’s had to make all that money. We expect great things from her this year, which will reflect in her $10 million in net worth growing.

Amelie Mauresmo – $8 Million
Amélie Mauresmo won the Australia Open and Wimbledon in 2006, but it was a long road to get there. Until then, she was criticized for being a seasonal contender that could never get over her nerves to clinch a major tourney. Mauresmo got to the number one position before getting over this hump, and was still ranked at the perfectly respectable 21st spot when she retired. Since then, she’s been coaching and that definitely brings money in. The majority of her $8 million, though, is from the remainder of her $15 million in career winnings.

Holly Holm – $3.5 Million
Holly Holm took out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, Rousey’s first defeat that turned out to be her penultimate. Holm is a former boxer and kickboxer as well, posting a really impressive 33-2-3 boxing record. Despite participating in other sports, the UFC is where she’s become best known, and taking out Rousey might be her greatest distinction. After all, she was unable to hold on to the belt, yet the winnings from three greatly different sports and endorsements have brought her net worth up to about $3.5 million.

Mikaela Shiffrin – $3 Million
Mikaela Shiffrin has made waves in the skiing world over the past decade, with two gold medals and one silver from the 2014 Sochi and 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. Now that Lindsey Vonn is retired, it seems that Shiffrin has taken up the mantle as the leader of U.S. women skiers. Shiffrin has attracted media attention since she was 17, which has brought her a lot of endorsements from companies like Adidas and Barilla. Her net worth is $3 million.

Sydney Leroux – $3 Million
From a family of baseball/softball players, Sydney Leroux was born to an American father and a Canadian mother in Surrey, Canada. The decision to play for the American national team has doubtlessly helped her exposure, as she was one of the first female players featured on FIFA 2016. Leroux has Nike endorsements along with Beats by Dre and Nestlé. It’s thanks to all of these endorsements, not her earnings from playing soccer, that she’s gotten a net worth of $3 million.

Elena Dementieva – $15 Million
With a career record of 576-273, Elena Dementieva is considered one of the best female players that never won any of the major singles tournaments. One honor she does have that other, better-ranked tennis players do not, however, is an Olympic gold medal, which she got at Beijing 2008 in the women’s singles competition. She made almost $15 million in career prize winnings and, with all of the endorsements throughout the years, her net worth comes out to about that amount: $15 million.

Simone Biles – $4 Million
Although not one of the “Fierce Five” that rocked the 2012 Olympics, Simone Biles had already gotten some $2 million in prize money and endorsements by the time the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro rolled around. Since then, Biles has added another $2 million to her net worth, thanks to her incredible performance in Rio, where she won gold in the vault, the all-around, and the floor exercise categories. She also won a gold medal for being part of the winning US team.

Chris Evert – $16 Million
Chris Evert was an absolute monster on the tennis court, winning the Australian Open, French Open, US Open, and Wimbledon multiple times. You know the term tennis bracelet, which actually means a diamond bracelet? Evert coined this when she said the diamond bracelet she lost in the 1987 US Open was a “tennis bracelet.” She’s got her own tennis academy, publishes Tennis magazine, commentates, and owns a clothing line. That’s why she’s got a net worth of $16 million, even after a costly divorce or two.

Serena Williams – $200 Million
Serena Williams is the richest female athlete with a net worth of $200 million. It makes sense that this is in the game of tennis. Furthermore, it’s no surprise that it’s Serena Williams who has made that much money, as her career prize money earnings currently stand at over $92 million. That number excludes all of the endorsement money she’s earned over the years, which has been well-deserved. In the past two decades, she has been the most dominating force in women’s tennis by far.

McKayla Maroney – $4 Million
McKayla Maroney is one of the most memorable gymnasts of all time. She’s the one pictured with an unimpressed face standing on the podium after winning silver in the 2012 Olympic Games. Maroney become a popular meme and her recognition has doubtlessly helped her get endorsements. She’s also had some guest appearances on TV shows, which doubtlessly helped her get to a net worth of $4 million. Injuries brought her to retire early, but she can always bank on her athleticism and the unimpressed look imprinted in our minds.

Maria Sharapova – $195 Million
Maria Sharapova is the greatest female Russian tennis player, with the distinction of being the first to be ranked number one in the world. She managed to hit the top spot when she was just 18 years old, but success on the court isn’t the only reason why she’s so wealthy. Sharapova comes in behind the Williams sisters in all-time earnings with over $38 million in prize money, yet she’s valued at $195 million. Although she’s widely considered one of the best competitors in women’s tennis, it’s her modeling career more than endorsements that have earned her money.

Ana Ivanovic – $16 Million
Ana Ivanovic was inspired by watching fellow Yugoslavian tennis great Monica Seles, who is actually an ethnic Hungarian. The unity of Yugoslavia broke as the Kosovo War tore their country apart, yet Ivanovic made sure to train, regardless of the NATO airstrikes. She won the French Open in 2008 and won over $15 million in prize money from 2003 until 2016, when she retired. Currently, she’s worth some $16 million by herself, but she married German soccer player Bastian Schweinsteiger in 2016, who is worth some $80 million.

Eugenie Bouchard – $6 Million
Eugenie Bouchard, from Montréal, made her mark in 2014 when she reached the finals at Wimbledon, as well as the semi-finals at the US and Australian Opens. Her recent performance has been quite dismal compared to where she was a few years ago and she’s not currently ranked that high, but she is the first female Canadian to have been ranked in the top five in singles, thanks to her 2014 successes. Her $6 million net worth comes from prize money and endorsements.

Ronda Rousey – $15 Million
Ronda Rousey is retired from MMA, but she’s still among the most widely recognized female athletes in the world. Starting off by winning Judo medals in the Olympics and other competitions, she retired from the sport at age 21 and moved to mixed martial arts. While she was the very first female fighter signed to UFC, the money she has made has also come from appearances in movies, such as in the Expendables 3 and Furious 7, as well as TV shows like Entourage. No longer an MMA fighter, today she wrestles in the WWE.

Paige VanZant – $3.5 Million
Nicknamed “12 Gauge” since she was a girl for her love of hunting, today Paige VanZant is one of the most popular UFC stars, despite not being a champion. Thanks to her good looks and charm, VanZant has cultivated a media persona that has gotten her on TV for more than just fighting. She was on Dancing with the Stars as well as Chopped. VanZant has also done a lot of modeling and wrote a book about her struggles and rise to fame. Altogether, she’s worth about $3.5 million.
