The 22-year-old gymnastics superstar who took the world by storm at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite all of her success, which includes four Olympic golds and one bronze medal, Simone had her fair share of struggles because of her expertise in gymnastics. Namely, even though she has become the most decorated gymnast in history, finally surpassing Shannon Miller, Simone spent many years being self-conscious about her muscular body. She spoke to Today Style about how she overcame that lack of confidence and learned to love her strength.
Simone shared that she was often teased for being so muscular when she was younger. “People would say mean things at the time. They used to call me a ‘swoldier,’ which didn’t make me feel the best,” Simone revealed on Today. “I wore sweaters or jackets all year long to cover my arms.” She continued that it was meeting other competitive gymnasts like her who helped her finally become confident in her looks.
“As gymnasts, we look similar to each other, so we’ve helped each love our bodies because it helps us with what we do. Everybody looked the same, had the same muscular build and we could all do things that other athletes couldn’t do.” Simone went on to describe how fellow Final Five teammate, Aly Raisman served as an incredible role model for someone who didn’t shirk away from her physical gifts.“Aly Raisman helped me a lot with my body-confidence issues and helped me learn to love how I look. She’s taught me a lot along the way, but most of the time, it’s just the same message: love yourself,” Biles concluded. These days, she’s more than happy to flaunt her strong physique, and hopes that other girls will be able to follow in her footsteps.
