All The Jobs Royals Had Before Marrying Into The Family

Once upon a time, there lived different royals around the world. But before they became princesses, they worked regular jobs just like us…

Freelance Calligrapher

As a child, Markle had a natural knack for mastering cursive, which is a skill that she later turned into a profitable side gig as an adult. According to Markle, freelance calligraphy “is super-lucrative because there are so few people doing it,” she told Esquire in 2013. Markle taught calligraphy at the stationery store where she worked.

Briefcase Model

As an aspiring actor, Meghan dealt with the turbulence of the industry just like anyone else. While auditioning for different shows, she landed herself a place on the Deal or No Deal game show as a briefcase girl. That’s right! Meghan was “the ill-fated number 24, which for some reason no one would ever choose,” she told Esquire in 2013. “I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down.”

Teacher’s Assistant

We can’t forget about the beloved Princess Diana, who took a series of low paying jobs when she returned to London from an educational institute in Switzerland. Before marrying Charles, the Prince of Wales, Diana landed a job at the Young England School in Pimlico. She specifically worked in the nursery as a teacher’s assistant, which is no surprise considering that Diana was a natural with children. The princess would continue teaching until her engagement to the Prince of Wales in February 1981.

Froyo Shop Cashier

First up, we have the beautiful Meghan Markle, who landed her very first job at 13 years old. The Duchess of Sussex actually sold frozen yogurt at a froyo shop called Humphrey Yogart, located in California. Her former boss, Paula Sheftel, sat down to speak with the Mirror. According to Sheftel, Meghan “earned minimum wage and was very popular with customers. She had to prove she had an outgoing personality and would work well with staff.” Markle even recalled a time she met actress Yasmine Bleeth in the parking lot that the froyo shop was located in.

Soup Kitchen Volunteer

Being the philanthropist that she is, it’s no secret that Markle enjoys dipping her toes or taking part in the world of charity. In fact, the royal Duchess volunteered at a soup kitchen quite a lot before marrying Prince Harry and joining the royal clan. The kitchen is located in the central city ghetto of Los Angeles’ Skid Row. The shop, commonly referred to as ‘The Hippie Kitchen,’ is still up and running today.

Stationary Guru

In addition to volunteering and charity work, Markle also enjoys her fair share of arts and crafts. To keep herself even busier than she already was, Markle started teaching two-hour classes on the art of gift-wrapping and book-binding. She held this part-time job, located at Paper Source in Beverly Hills, while juggling auditions in 2004 and 2005. The CEO, Winnie Park, told People that she “advised customers on projects — from wedding invitations to creating personalized stationary to gift-wrapping.”

Hostess With The Mostest

Next up, we have a job that can be considered to be pretty traditional for any aspiring actor, which is exactly what Markle was at one point. In order to pay the bills, the L.A. native took a gig working as a hostess for a restaurant located in Beverly Hills. She told Vanity Fair that it’s just one of “those things that actors do to try to make ends meet.” We totally feel you, Meghan.

Junior Press Officer

While Markle was still studying in university, she used her uncle’s connections with the U.S. government to actually land herself an internship at the State Department. She ended up spending six weeks as a junior press officer at the American Embassy in Argentina. Her boss, Mark Krischik, said that she showed “she had all that it takes to be a successful diplomat.” Though Markle wanted and intended to become a foreign service officer, she, unfortunately, didn’t pass the test.

Blogger

Would you be surprised if we told you that Markle ran a lifestyle blog? Because, we aren’t! In fact, we kind of expected it. Between 2014 and 2017, Meghan had her own blog called The Tig, which focused on food, travel, fashion, and beauty. In a 2016 interview with Ebony, Markle said she hoped The Tig would be like “a friend that’s always there for you; a great place that makes you feel good.” Though the blog was an “amazing community of inspiration, support, and fun,” Marke shut it down in April 2017 after she and Prince Harry started dating.

Fashion Designer

As if her résumé wasn’t packed enough, Markle also had her try in the fashion world. She created various kinds of dresses for a 2016 collection with Reitmans in which she “toiled over design and print, I shared my thoughts on everything, and I ended up with a limited collection of pieces that reflect facets of my personal style that I think that you’ll love,” Markle wrote on her blog at the time. According to Markle’s book, the four spring dresses each cost less than $100. She also created a workwear collection with the same retailer.

Tori Amos Superfan

One of Markle’s first gigs happened to be for a Tori Amos music video. If you’ve never heard the name before, Tori Amos is a singer-songwriter and pianist. If the name sounds familiar, then go back and watch the video to catch a glimpse of the royal icon before she made her big break. Markle makes an appearance in the video, in which she longingly gazes at the singer performing in a giant glass box in a Los Angeles parking lot. The Duchess of Sussex made a total of $600 to appear in the “1,000 Oceans” music video.

“Hot Girl” Cameo Role

If you didn’t know, Markle also played opposite Ashton Kutcher in a short scene from the 2005 film A Lot Like Love. Markle’s character was called “hot girl” in the credits. During the scene, Markle’s character says “hi” to Kutcher’s as she sits next to him on the plane. She then has a brief and flirtatious interaction with a different man that sits down across the aisle from her. According to her biography, Markle was only supposed to say one word but she convinced the director to give her five lines instead.

Tostitos Commercial

In 2009, Markle made another appearance, this time in an understated Tostitos commercial. She goes to the grocery store to prep for a party she’s having at her house. The voice that narrates the commercial is definitely not hers but we’ll just pretend it is. “Thirteen ingredients?” she thinks to herself, staring at the bag of non-Tostitos chips with a look of concern. “That’s more people than I invited to the party, unless Denise brings Jerry. Ugh, Jerry…with his short shorts.” Markle expresses a look of disgust and discards the bag of chips for Tostitos.

Rachel On Suits

Markle made her big break as Rachel Zane from the hit television series, SuitsSuits, in case you’ve never seen it, is set in New York City at a fictional law firm, and follows talented college dropout Mike Ross who begins working as a law associate for Harvey Specter, despite never attending law school. Attorney Rachel Zane was a role that Markle first undertook in 2011 and she actually starred in the series for eight seasons before calling it quits to become a royal.

The Family Party Store

Next up, we have the sweet Kate Middleton. Before marrying Prince William and becoming the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate actually held a few different jobs. She first worked for her family’s business, Party Pieces, a shop that sells all types of party supplies. Working for a family business definitely has its own kind of perks; it’s a certain kind of privilege in and of itself, although the work was undoubtedly way more mundane than literally being a royal.

Accessories Buyer

Aside from helping out the family, Kate took a part-time job as an accessories buyer with Jigsaw, a British retailer. While “accessories buyer” may sound like an impressive title, Kate essentially functioned as a personal assistant, more or less. Of course, though, this is the case for so many young, entry level workers. Her job tasks included menial, non-duchessy duties like running errands. She would also bring tea and snacks to the talent on the set of photoshoots. Not as glamorous a life, that’s for sure.

Nanny

As an 18th birthday gift, Diana’s mother bought her a flat at Coleherne Court in Earl’s Court in 1979. She ultimately lived there with three of her friends until 1981. During that period of time, she began working for a woman named Mary Robertson for just $5 an hour. Diana was unsurprisingly hired as a part-time nanny for her toddler son, Patrick. According to Inside Edition, Robertson was extremely fond of Diana and thought she “was wonderful with my child.”

The Princess of Wales had always been a hard worker, holding different jobs throughout her life before Prince Charles. Not only did she keep herself busy with children, but she also found a way to make some extra cash in housekeeping. She cleaned houses, including Mary Robertson’s. Robertson actually recalled that the future princess Diana would do things around the house when Patrick had his afternoon nap. The international icon did laundry, washed dishes, and picked up toys — pretty unheard of for a royal.

Modeling

You didn’t think that we would review the royals without mentioning Grace Kelly, did you?! If you don’t recognize the name, Grace Kelly was an American film actress who became Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in April 1956. Before she became a royal, though, she worked different jobs in order to pay her tuition. By the time she was 12 years old, she began a part-time modeling job and was frequently in demand for her photogenic good looks, poise, and blonde hair.

Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones is the Countess of Wessex and a member of the British royal family. She is married to Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. Before she joined the royal clan, however, the Countess started a successful career in public relations working for a variety of firms, including four years at London’s Capital Radio. During her time at the firm, she was assigned to the press and promotions department, as well as public relations companies The Quentin Bell Organization and MacLaurin Communications & Media. Sophie met Prince Edward while working at Capital Radio.

RJH Public Relations

From Capital Radio, Sophie went on to work for different firms before she decided to start her own venture. In 1996, two years before getting hitched, Rhys-Jones launched her public relations agency. She named the firm RJH Public Relations and ran the business with her partner, Murray Harkin, for five years. In 2002, Sophie disposed half of her 30% share in the business but still retains 15% and a seat on the board. In 2006, the company hit some rocky waters and ended up closing without paying off any debts.

Ski Representative

While Sophie Rhys-Jones worked her way through the Public Relations and Communications industry, she also had her fun traveling around the world. Before she launched RJH Public Relations, the Countess of Wessex even found a job working as a ski representative in Switzerland, which sounds like a totally awesome gig. The future royal member also spent a year working and traveling around Australia, the land down under. Sophie seems like a very adventurous one, to say the least.

Reality TV

Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland, came from very humble beginnings before she caught the eye of Sweden’s handsome Prince Carl Philip in 2010. Prior to her marriage, the future royal dabbled in reality television and modeling. In fact, while she was studying in Stockholm, the princess actually worked as a waitress and glamour model. Sofia then moved to New York to study accounting and worked as a certified part-time yoga instructor in order to make ends meet.
